Awakening

The rebel within me

Imagine a run-of-the-mill type region in Germany. Middle-Class, conservative and down-to-earth. These are Mark’s roots. Neither his British mother nor his German father quite fit in. They are well travelled and open-minded. Yet they practise a strict parenting style and teach Mark to obey the rules and follow the norms. Mark adopts a conviction dictating that prosperity follows obedience to authority.

Not surprisingly he settles in well during his mandatory service in the German army, extending his term to become an instructor and commissioned officer. Soon though, a silenced voice reawakens and cries for his attention. A rebel seeking freedom and a life beyond conformity.

“To me there is no life without liberty.”

A journey to myself

Uni has him back in the realm of convention. Consequently Mark spends more time outside than inside college. Soon he heads the student board of the German Association for Management and Industrial Engineering and starts working as a part-time business consultant. But in the end things still don’t add up for him.

In an act of desperation he hands in his master thesis after three sleepless nights and days, grabs a backpack and hauls his pale, depleted and dead-alive body into a venture that will become the most transformative time of his life.

Travelling through Russia, South-East Asia and India for the better part of a year he starts questioning everything he believed in, returning with a strong-willed resolution:

“I only do what makes sense – no matter the convention.”

Where I arrived

Brutally naive, Mark starts his first business in 2010. He founds the think tank intrinsify with Lars Vollmer. What begins as a succession of failures turns into a growing business and becomes one of the leading brands for the future of work, modern leadership and organisational design in Germany. Increasing success fuels Mark’s drive for more. He launches further businesses, becomes a sought-after speaker and starts fine-tuning his work around the life he intends to live.

After moving from London to Berlin, Mark and his family choose to settle in a sea-side village in England, which Mark enjoys especially for its authenticity, devoid of fancy-schmancy phoniness. Mark’s near-obsession for new experiments frequently drives his wife up the wall. But many things stick. As does surfing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and his passion for the Paleo lifestyle that he and his wife share. Real food on the table, no chairs, minimalist wardrobes, cold showers – the list of broken conventions is long.

“I avoid constraining my life by society’s conventions.”
